London City Airport Expansion

lcaYou should have received slip from Newham Council stating that the London City Airport ("LCY") is planning to increase the number of flight movements from 80,000 to 120,000. You may be wondering what this will mean in practice.

In 2006 Birmingham Airport hosted 119,000 movements and Luton Airport 116,000. LCY will therefore be a major airport. In addition, nearly two million more passengers will travel through LCY each year.

In paragraph 4.11 of its application LCY states that on weekdays the limit on movements will nearly double from 360 to 592.

A greater proportion of the planes using LCY will be larger planes.

There will therefore be a significant impact on the Village. That impact needs to be carefully and objectively evaluated. Newham Council has given you three weeks to make any observations. We would ask you to do so.

For those of you interested in more background we would direct you to the LCY's masterplan and the Greater London Authority's response to it.

Fire Safety Activities

Newham's four fire stations will open their doors to the public this LFBsummer as part of the London Fire Brigade's Safe Living in Newham project. All residents are invited to visit their local fire station at a free fire safety day.

The first event will be held at Plaistow Fire Station, 145 Prince Regent Lane, on Tuesday 17 June from 2pm to 4pm. Silvertown Fire Station, 303 North Woolwich Road, will open its doors on Wednesday 25 June from 11am to 1pm.

The fire safety days, which are supported by Newham's community forums, will give residents a chance to learn about fire safety, go on a fire engine and watch a demonstration by firefighters.

People can also sign up for a free home visit where a firefighter will visit their property, talk about fire risks and fit a smoke alarm if necessary.

Executive adviser to community forums, Councillor Richard Crawford, said: "I'm keen that people take advantage of this opportunity to learn about fire safety. The vast majority of fires in the home are accidents and these can be prevented by following some simple steps."

Further fire safety days will take place at East Ham and Stratford Fire Stations this summer. For more information about the events freephone 0800 519 4015.

There are nine community forums in Newham working to make each local area a safer, healthier and more interesting place to live.

Neighbourhood Watch

NHWBritannia Village Neighbourhood watch has formerly been created. Signs and window stickers are being put up all over the village.

If you would like to get involved or feedback any information then check the web page or message board for contact details.

Recycling

In the new recycling service rubbish and orange bags will be Recycle Bagscollected on the same day by one vehicle. This is possible thanks to new technology which separates orange bags from the other rubbish. Its really important that you still recycle using the orange bags as they go into a separate process where the recyclable materials are recovered.

Tie your orange bags to avoid contamination and drop it into your bin, along with your rubbish, by 7am on your current refuse collection day. If your bin gets too full, it's okay to place your orange bag beside your bin but please do not leave any general rubbish bags outside your bin.

What's that smell ?

The two main sources of bad smells in the area are Akzo Nobel and John SmellKnight. The latter being considered the main and most offensive smell.

Odours from Akzo Nobel tend to more chemical while smells from Knights are described by the environmental health as meaty, dog food type and can occur in the afternoon.

The principle part of the process at John Knights is the rendering of animal wastes to produce high grade tallow for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics together with meat meal for pet food.

Crime prevention, The Royal Docks Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Number plate theft. There has been a growing crime Safetrend across the country whereby car number plates are being stolen to be used in crime.  This means that as well as the inconvenience and expense of having to get new number plates, the victim may also suffer from receiving summonses for unpaid parking/speeding/bus lane tickets, the congestion charge or even questioned regarding more serious crimes!

In an effort to combat this problem, the Metropolitan Police Service in partnership with Tate and Lyle, are offering to secure your number plates.

Garages. Youths are now regularly targeting garages.
When you drive in or out you must check that the roller shutter comes down behind you. If you are on foot, use the ground floor doors to get access to the garage rather than the roller shutters.

All. Report everything. Use the links report security issues. Use it to let the police and neighbours know of any problems. The alternative is that you stand alone and hope the problem goes away. It will not go away. The police have to be given sufficient information to allow them to deal with the problem.
